Exactly 62 years ago to the day, President John F. Kennedy designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which it falls as “Police Week.” This is a somber but important occasion to reflect on officers’ service and contribution to public safety.
Today, we pay special recognition to law enforcement officers who have given everything — their lives — in the line of duty. As we reflect on life and those who have fallen, our hearts feel especially heavy. Yet, on that same token, a sense of hope consumes our souls as we rededicate ourselves to our greater purpose — protecting those who protect us.
Are we better off today than we were 62 years ago? That answer lies in the eye of the beholder. We can say with overwhelming certainty that we, as citizens of the greatest country in the world, have the power to influence and shape our future.
As we join our nation in recognizing the profound sacrifices our men and women of law enforcement have made, we challenge you to continue to push our culture, our society, forward. Be kind. Practice empathy. Show grace. And respect those who defend us — living, working and enjoying freedom in our great country. Say thank you to a law enforcement officer today.
With honor and respect for those who have given everything,
Angel Armor
