Body Armor Maintenance: Your Essential Care Guide

Body Armor is one of the most important pieces of equipment the first responder has. Proper storage, care, and frequent inspection of your vest can help maintain the life of your armor, ensuring that your body armor remains reliable, effective, and able to provide necessary protection when needed.

Why is body armor maintenance important?

It is crucial to maintain your body armor for a variety of reasons.

Safety: Improperly maintained or damaged body armor may not provide the intended level of protection and could put the wearer at risk of injury or even death in dangerous situations.

Durability: Extend the lifespan of your carrier and body armor with regular cleaning and appropriate storage. Confirming the integrity of the armor material and accessories ensures it performs as designed when needed.

Cost Savings: Save money in the long run by taking steps to care for your body armor. Repairs and early replacement can be avoided by looking after your body armor carefully and often.

Body Armor STORAGe Tips

Store your armor flat either on a shelf or other flat surface. When this is not practical, suspending it on a clothes hanger is the next best method. Your armor should never be folded, compressed or stood on its edge. Improper storage will create excessive permanent creases in your body armor and may cause curling at the edges.

Store your body armor at room temperature as often as possible. Never store your armor in places where temperatures exceed 130 – 150°F – like in a trunk of a vehicle. Avoid compromising the ballistic integrity of your body armor and its performance specifications with excessive exposure to heat.

Body Armor MAINTENANCE TIPS

Clean each component of your RISE Body Armor System separately and NEVER as a complete system.

Cleaning your RISE Body Armor Packages – remove the front and rear armor panels from the carrier before cleaning the armor packages. Gently wipe the panels with a damp sponge or microfiber cloth using cold water and a mild laundry detergent, if necessary. Lay the panels flat and wipe them dry. The shoulder straps can be cleaned in a similar manner.

Cleaning your vest – after your panels are removed, spot-clean the carrier for normal dirt and dust using a soft, clean sponge or microfiber cloth and a mild laundry detergent if necessary. To treat tough spots on the carrier’s exterior use a soft brush with mild soap and cold water. Wipe off all excess soap with a clean, damp microfiber cloth. Place the carrier on a hanger and allow it to air dry indoors. Ensure the carrier is completely dry before reinstalling armor panels. The belt may be cleaned in a similar manner.

Repairs – in the event of damage to your vest, it’s important to note that any repair made to the carrier should not compromise its protective capabilities or void the manufacturer’s warranty. If in doubt, seek professional assistance.
